The interference effect exists. It is also one of the most exaggerated ideas in training, and the exaggeration costs people the cardiovascular fitness that would improve their lifting.
What is actually being measured
Concurrent training studies find that adding endurance work can attenuate strength and hypertrophy adaptations relative to lifting alone. That is the effect, and it is real.
Three things determine how large it is.
Volume and intensity of the cardio. A modest amount is close to free. A serious endurance block is not.
Temporal proximity. Cardio immediately before lifting degrades the lifting. Immediately after is better. Six hours apart is better still. Separate days is best.
Modality. Cycling interferes less with lower-body lifting than running does, largely because the eccentric loading and resulting muscle damage are lower.
Two 30-minute moderate sessions/week: ~300–400 kcal, negligible damage
Five 60-minute hard sessions/week: ~2,500+ kcal, meaningful eccentric load
The first is a rounding error against a lifting programme. The second is a second sport. "Does cardio kill gains" collapses these into one question and they are not one question.
The case for doing some
Better work capacity between sets. Faster recovery within and between sessions. A larger maintenance figure, which means a diet can run on more food. And the health outcomes, which are not a training variable but are the actual reason.
For a lifter, two to three moderate sessions a week sits comfortably below the interference threshold and returns more than it costs.
The ordering rule
If it has to be one session: lift first. The resistance stimulus is the one you are protecting, and pre-fatiguing it to protect the cardio is backwards.
The intake connection
Cardio raises expenditure, which changes the maintenance figure your deficit is calculated against. If you add three sessions a week mid-diet without adjusting, you have quietly deepened the deficit — which may be what you wanted, or may be why adherence collapsed two weeks later.
Either way it is arithmetic, and it is only visible if the intake side is measured well enough to compare against.

Does cardio interfere with muscle growth?
There is a measurable interference effect, and it is far smaller than gym folklore suggests. Its magnitude scales with the volume and intensity of the cardio, with how close it sits to resistance training in time, and with modality — cycling interferes less with lower-body lifting than running does, largely because the eccentric loading and muscle damage are lower.
How much cardio is too much?
Two to three moderate sessions a week is essentially free for most lifters and pays for itself in work capacity and recovery. Interference becomes visible when cardio volume climbs high enough to compete for recovery with lifting, or when high-intensity sessions land immediately before or after leg training.
Should I do cardio before or after lifting?
After, if it must be the same session, because doing it first degrades the lifting performance that is the primary stimulus. Better still is separating them by six hours or more, or putting them on different days. If you can only do one session, lift first.
